Education

SACRE - Surrey Advisory Council for Religious Education

Farnham Humanists like to make positive contributions to the community, e.g.:
  • giving talks to schools, community groups, etc.
  • giving Humanist commentary on current events
  • contributing to ethical, moral and religious discussions and debates
  • provision of educational materials

Feb 2005: BHA has protested about state payments for transporting children to special faith schools but not to those wanting to escape going to faith schools!  David and Jennie will attend the next Surrey SACRE to get known. Some RE teachers seem to be unaware of SACRE!

April 2005: Jennie Johnson said that she was going as a member of the public to the next Surrey SACRE meeting on 15th March. She has had confirmation that her November letter requesting inclusion of a humanist member had been received and that the membership is likely to be reviewed following the local elections in May.

May 2005: Jennie Johnson reported on her attendance at the Surrey SACRE n 15th March as an observer. Paul Gateshill of Four S provides professional support to the SACRE. He advised that it would be best to wait until November when the new members will have become familiar with their roles before applying for Humanist participation. A precedent has been established by the Youth SACRE just set up which has 3 agnostics and atheists out of its current membership of 12 pupils! Paul requested that we provide a speaker to the Heads of RE conference in November which we are keen to do.

September 2005: Jennie Johnson reported on her attendance at the Surrey SACRE on 18th July as an observer for the second time. Farnham Humanists have been given the opportunity to present the case for Humanist membership for 10 minutes at the next SACRE meeting on November 23rd. The potential offer is for temporary co-opted membership for a year with no vote. The same opportunity is being offered to the B'Hai faith. The proposed invitation for a Humanist speaker to the Heads of RE conference sometime in November is still likely but is waiting confirmation and a date.

December 2005: Jennie Johnson presented the case for Humanist membership of the Surrey SACRE at their meeting on November 23rd. A member of the B'Hai faith also presented a request for membership. In addition Jennie attended the BHA's annual meeting for members and would-be members of SACREs. Humanists currently participate in over 65 SACREs across England and Wales.

May 2005: Mike Adams said that he would speak to the prison governor where he works about possibilities for a way forward.
We met on September 11th to discuss religion and crime. Mike Adams gave us an entertaining and informative talk which included reference to his experiences as a Humanist working in the probation service. A lively group debate which touched on Humanist views on the morality of punishment and whether determinism exists followed this.  The proposed law against incitement to religious hatred was also raised and will be discussed in more detail at our next meeting on October 9th.
Prison Visit

Remembrance day 2006- Several members attended the service at the Farnham Memorial and laid a wreath. David Savage said that he had been contacted by a humanist group from Devon asking how he had arranged it as their council had not allowed them to attend their local memorial service.

February 2006 : A Farnham Secondary school took up Farnham Humanist's offer of providing talks on Humanism. They requested a speaker to address pupils as they look at arguments for and against God. Two dates were arranged, for January and February 2006.

May 2005: Elizabeth Hillman has now written twice to Frensham Heights and Heath End School without a positive response. A sixth form college was thought to be likely to be more interested and Pam Woodroffe offered to make contact with Sally Francis, the Head of Farnham College.
